Fight crooked, mold-farming landlord!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What: Demand delivery action to fight crooked landlord
When: Meet up Friday, May 7th at 10:30am and delivering the demand at 11:00am.
Where: 12th Ave NE & NE 75th St (Google Map) Just north of U-District, off Lake City Way.
Why: We are supporting Maria as she tells her ex-landlord to give her back her stolen deposit and to stop harassing her with bogus bills.
Background:
Maria moved out of her apartment in West Seattle on 3/31 after living there about three years. Her apartment and possibly the entire building has dangerous levels of mold. She spoke with her property manager multiple times asking to have it checked out and removed and was ignored. Finally she called the City of Seattle and they confirmed that the landlord was in violation but told her they couldn't do anything. Her landlord just told her to "get some bleach." When she tried to clean it, black mold and mildew would reappear within days. The excessive mold caused Maria and her entire family respiratory and eye problems and made her feel sick all the time.
Tired of living in unsafe conditions, she gave 15-days notice and moved out on 3/31. Two weeks after moving out, Maria received a bill out of the blue for $1,500 stating "3 day pay or vacate" billing her for April's rent ($800) and a strange laundry list of undocumented utility charges ($697.75) she had never seen and certainly does not owe. Her notice was legally five days shorter than the 20 day requirement, but her apartment was uninhabitable and she was forced to leave to keep from having further medical problems. Maria's attempts to resolve the situation amicably were met with open hostility, threatening language and thinly veiled racism. Staff told Maria she "should learn English" when she asked them to take care of the mold and when she tried to coordinate meetings with bilingual family or friends, they refused to cooperate.
Maria and her family had to throw out most of their furniture and much of their clothing and other household items because they were ruined from longterm mold exposure. Replacing their furniture and clothing cost almost $2,000, which on top of moving expenses was already a significant financial burden. Receiving this outrageous and unexpected bill after everything Maria and her family had gone through was like a slap in the face. These illegitimate charges are very upsetting to Maria who does not want to have her credit and rental records ruined for bills she never owed and cannot pay.
Maria's landlord is clearly retaliating for Maria's mold complaints and trying to intimidate her into paying money she doesn't owe. To add insult to injury, they still haven't returned her $500 deposit. At this action, Maria will be rightfully demanding that they return her deposit and stop harassing her with unwarranted bills. Let's join Maria and send this abusive landlord a message that they cannot get away with treating their tenants this way!
